Painting and repairing exterior wood shutters is easy when you know the basics. First, make sure the paint you choose is exterior paint, and consider the durability and the resistance you need against the elements. The sun, rain, wind and sudden changes in temperatures can cause many problems with exterior paint on any surface and since wood shutters can be difficult to paint, you want to make sure you won’t have to redo the paint job. Meaning, to paint the wood shutters right the first time. Follow these steps, and you’ll be guaranteed you won’t have to paint the wood shutters again for a very long time.
o Sand your wood shutters to remove any rough spots.
o Prime the wood with an oil-based primer.
o Allow the primer to dry.
o Apply 2 coats of the best exterior oil-based paint available .
o Allow 24 hours to pass before applying the 2nd coat.
After you’ve hung your newly-painted exterior wood shutters, sit back and relax. As time passes though, they will take a lot of abuse from the elements and over time this can cause the joints in the shutter frame to come apart. Here are a few tips on how to repair a wood shutter frame:
o Hold or clamp the wood shutter frame together and make sure the louver slats are properly positioned.
o Drill a pilot hole through the wood shutter stile and into the shutter rail.
o Use a drill to insert a corrosion resistant screw in the hole to secure the frame together.
o Then follow the prime and painting procedures listed above for the screw area only.
